OCD
Helping with an office move over the past few days really got me thinking about organization or should I say OCD?
Not having too much input in network organization until my recent job move I have not really thought too much about this subject until now. Lets start with this picture:
This was a photo of the finishing stage of setting up a patch panel/switch, 24 ports in and we quickly realized that we had our work cut out for us when it comes to organization. The finished product:
I find myself being more and more OCD with everything computer/network related that I have been doing lately. Anyone else have the same feelings?
Face off: Exchange vs. Zimbra
For what little time I have spent in the ‘corporate’ world all that I have ever known/used has been zimbra. Zimbra has a nice product, some versions are free (which shouldn’t even be considered a competitor to exchange) and depending on what level you need support at and the company also offers paid versions (Push email, integrated backup and Clustering). Now never having managed a Zimbra setup it just seems like there would be instances where admins would be doing double the work. For instance with Zimbra adding new clients would not only have to be added with Active Directory but also from within Zimbra. Also, with most open source products you are required to use various connectors and other software to make the product work correctly with the Windows OS/Office products. This factor alone in my opinion is just plain annoying. Why should I install extra bloatware on my PC to make an open source product work the way it should be designed to work to begin with? From what I have seen Zimbra connectors and Outlook do not play well together.
Now every blog/post that I have found online raves Zimbra over Exchange. Why is that? I’m a Microsoft guy plain and simple and I am new to Exchange, just receiving my first certification in it this past week. I just don’t see the advantages that some people are raving about. One of the huge benefits, in my opinion, of Exchange over Zimbra is ActiveSync. Another huge advantage, or much less of an annoyance with consideration to Zimbra is that Exchange just works out of the box with Outlook. No special connectors needed or lack there of for 64 bit
(I realize this connector is out now, but for the longest time was not.
So with that said…comments, suggestions, smart remarks?
What’s this all about?
What’s this blog all about?
This blog is going to be about a number of things: My life, technology and just about anything that strikes me as interesting at the time that I post it.
